Sámesijdda – a little insight into the Sami culture and what reindeer husbandry looks like today

About 15 km south from Jokkmokk you can visit a Sami family and their reindeer. The family Länta is the family who own the shop Sápmi Ren & Vilt. In this shop, you can buy reindeer meat, moose meat and several kinds of fish. Also, they offer some smoked and dried types of meat.

Feel welcome to visit this winter residence, where you get to meet a small reindeer herd. You are able to get be very close by the reindeer while your host feeds them to get them close to you. They can come so close that it might be possible to caress them. Your host will tell you about their culture and about reindeer husbandry. After meeting the reindeer the tour proceed in the Lávvu where you all sit around an open fire on reindeer skins, drink coffee and taste gáhkko (a Sámi flatbread) with reindeer meat.

  1. Ann Mussche:

It was a great visit with a warm welcome and an unforgettable experience to be so close to the wild reindeers and that special family who still lives together with them.
Even though I love animals and I hardly eat any meat, I had to taste the rendier meat and it was delicious, cooked on a fire in front of us. Back to basics, in nature with natives, A DREAM ❤️

    • Olga Stam:

      Hej Ann,
so nice to hear that it was an unforgettable experience. I can imagine, since the reindeer are special to me also.
Hope we meet again someday in Jokkmokk!
      Byebye, Olga

  2. Jörgen Forsberg:

    This review came in per email on 2020-01-12;

    Hej Olga
    Vi hade en fantastisk upplevelse.

  3. Huiyan Zhang:

It was a great tour that we had during those two hours. We got the chance to feed the reindeers, learn how to catch a reindeer, and had a great lunch of reindeer soup and reindeer meat. I would recommend this tour to my friends without any doubt.

    • Olga Stam:

      Hej Huiyan!
Lovely to hear that you had a great time during this activity. I hope you can come to Swedish Lapland again sometime and that we may help you again to find your activities.
Hope you have a save journey home!

      Olga

  4. Zaccaria:

We had a great time with Helena!! We learned a lot about the Sami culture, fed the reindeers and did many other activities.
We also had a great lunch in the traditional tent, around the fire. Overall, a super recommended experience!

Also, Olga has been super helpful in organizing the experience and accommodating our needs/time constraints.
Will recommend to friends visiting the region

    • Olga Stam:

  5. Valentin:

We really enjoyed the visit. We wanted to get a real insight into the Sami culture and thanks to Helena, that is exactly what we got. We were able to understand how reindeer are conceptualised in their culture and how they take care for them. It was also an opportunity to learn about their traditions, with just the right amount of mystery and rationality about how they have evolved in modern times.

Overall, I would highly recommend this experience, especially as Olga was very keen to help us plan this trip and did her best to arrange things for us before and during our stay.

    • Olga Stam:

Hej Valentin! Many thanks for your review and kind words. I will pass it on to Helena also.
It was a pleasure to help you and hopefully we will meet again in Jokkmokk someday!
      Byebye!
      Olga

  6. Marianna:

It was our first time in Lappland and we couldn’t imagine not visiting the Sami family. It was really worth it! We could see an ordinary day in life of Sami, be very close to the reindeers, have an amazing lunch in the traditional Sami tent when we were served delicious reindeer meat and learned about Sami culture. We came to Jokkmokk without a car and Olga arranged transport for us. Later on she showed us some truly amazing places around Jokkmokk. She has really helpful and organized. We do recommend this experience and Olga’s care :))

    • Olga Stam:

      Hej Marianna,
And you saw quit a lot of reindeers as well! Hope to hear from you again next time you are in Jokkmokk so we can arrange lots of activities for you!
Stay safe and it was so nice to meet you! Byebye.
      Olga
